Summer hikes at the Prom
Parks Victoria staff and contractors have been working extremely hard on reopening the remaining closed tracks of the Prom after the March 2011 flood event. It was our hope that we would have the southern section of the Prom (overnight hikes to Sealers Cove, Refuge Cove, Little Waterloo Bay and the Lighthouse) temporarily open for visitors over the summer ballot period.

Whilst works have been progressing very well, this week we commissioned an independent engineering risk assessment on the Mt Oberon Road. This assessment, together with predicted high rainfall over the next couple of months identified unacceptable visitor safety risks should this section of the park be opened before necessary road works are completed.
Whilst this is disappointing, we regard visitor safety as our number one priority.
We will  expanding our summer holiday activity program

What walks will be open over summer?

  • Norman Beach
  • South Norman / Biddy’s Track / Norman Pt
  • Squeaky Beach
  • Squeaky Beach Track
  • Tidal Overlook
  • Squeaky Beach via Picnic Bay
  • Picnic Bay
  • Pillar Point
  • Lilly Pilly Link Track
  • Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk
  • Lilly Pilly Gully Circuit
  • Mt Bishop Track
  • Millers Landing Nature Walk
  • Vereker Outlook
  • Millers Landing Link Track
  • Big Drift
  • Woodland Walk
  • Picnic Bay, Squeaky Beach, Tidal Overlook, Lilly Pilly Gully day walk
  • Gully car park
  • Darby Saddle To Tongue Point
  • Darby River to Tongue Point
  • Darby River, Fairy Cove, Tongue Point, Darby Saddle

Fancy a hike in the northern wilderness?
While the overnight hiking tracks in the southern Prom will remain closed over summer, intrepid walkers may like to explore the remote wilderness of the northern Prom. The Five Mile Road overnight hiking track from the Five Mile carpark to Five Mile beach will be open over summer with overnight hikers camp sites available at Barry Creek and Five Mile Beach.
Bookings are essential and an overnight hiking permit is required before departing.
What’s next on the agenda?
The flood recovery efforts will continue during the summer holidays with a dedicated group continuing to work on the southern walking tracks with reopening for selected tracks anticipated for April 2012.

2 November — 20 December
FOOTPRINTS: THE JOURNEY OF LUCY AND PERCY PEPPER
This special exhibition and accompanying book is a fascinating search through public and family records that trace the lives of one Aboriginal family in the first half of the twentieth century. Footprints explores the different places the Pepper family lived along with extraordinary details about the events of their lives, their resilience in the face of adversity, and the strong family connections they fiercely protected despite government policies that aimed to separate so called ‘half-caste’ Aboriginal people from their full-blood family relations.
Featuring information panels and a short film, Footprints also illustrates how Aboriginal people can retrace the steps of their ancestors through public records, and in the case of the Stolen Generations, reconnect with families and communities.

Prom’s Tidal River Campground to re-open in time for school holidays

19 Aug 2011

The Wilsons Promontory National Park, Tidal River campsites and visitor area will reopen from 23 September in time for the school holidays. Over 250 camping spots will be available at Tidal River as well as some roofed cabin accommodation.

The Visitor Centre will also up and running to provide information about what is accessible and what is still under repair. Visitors need to be aware that many track closures will still remain whilst extensive repair works and possible track alignments are undertaken, especially in the south of the park.

Parks Victoria will continue to keep the public informed as the staged re-openings continue in the coming months. In the meantime, we ask visitors to respect any ongoing closures for their own safety.

Camping and accommodation from September 23 onwards

For those keen to visit the Prom again this year, camping and accommodation bookings for the September to December period will reopen at 9am Monday 22 August. Visitors can book by calling 13 1963.

Bookings for 2012 will open on 7 September.

Since Easter, visitors have still been able to access the northern section of Wilsons Promontory to continue to enjoy the beauty of the park. Severe flash flooding caused significant damage to the national park in March this year.
