Saturday was Lyrebird’s big day, cool and overcast to start, the street closed to traffic, market stall holders setting up, a covered stage in front of  the hall, people arriving, the atmosphere was electric. MEENIYAN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY BANK
PROJECT NEWS

ATM: Finally, the long-awaited ATM has arrived! This is a big achievement for our community bank project. It is also a very good reason to change your banking now to the Bendigo Bank, as you would then be able to withdraw funds from the ATM without incurring a fee. As well as saving you money, this will also help to get the bank branch opened sooner, and enable the branch to open with a sound customer base. This is an important factor in returning profits as quickly as possible to the community, as well as returning dividends to those who have pledged their support. Your banking could include loans, credit cards, savings accounts, term deposits: anything that you already have through your existing bank. Refer to the ad in this publication for details of how to open your account under the Meeniyan branch code: this is a MUST for those transferring their banking. People living or working in the proposed catchment area of Meeniyan, Dumbalk, Stony Creek, Fish Creek, Tarwin, Koonwarra, Mardan, Nerrena, Waratah, and everywhere in between are invited and encouraged to participate, because the community bank branch will benefit all the surrounding areas.

MEENIYAN REAL ESTATE NEWS
FROM PROM COUNTRY FIRST NATIONAL REAL ESTATE

It just keeps on! Just when we thought that the last 2 houses for sale in the township had been sold this week (2/56 Whitelaw Street, and 12B Meikle Street) – congratulations to vendors and buyers), another pops up to fill its place! This time, Alan and Heather Brown’s house, at 173 Whitelaw Street is now on the market. So if you think you might have missed out on the Meeniyan Market, you might be lucky this time if you move quickly! Another property to sell very quickly, Max and Rhonda Beard’s house came and went with quiet efficiency by your local agents…sold to Daphne Densley, whose long search for the perfect property came to a happy ending when she stepped inside 2 Royston Street! We wish Max and Rhonda all the very best in their new adventure. We are able to confirm that the vacant commercial block beside Bloch Pharmacy has in fact sold – to Shane and Kellie Brewer of South Gippsland Glass. We have been reliably informed that a permit application is now making its way through council for a shiny new retail shop at the front, with the Glass showroom, parking, and factory at the rear! That will mean another two forthcoming businesses for Meeniyan – down the track a bit. A little bird has told us that Andrew McEwan (Director Sustainability, South Gippsland Shire) and his wife Maggie have bought a parcel of land in McIlwaine Street. It will be great to welcome Andrew and Maggie to Meeniyan! It seems that Meeniyan is managing to attract ALL SORTS these days! While we are on the subject of land, we hear that Julie and Geoff Dean are about to see some real action on their own block in McKitterick Street. Hooray for them, it’s finally about to happen! A big welcome to Ann and Jim Read, who have just settled on Julie (of Meeniyan Fruit & Veg) and Maureen’s place at Dumbalk. Ann and Jim moved in last Tuesday, then headed off Wednesday morning for a Hawaii holiday! We’ll be trying to get Jim to come down for twilight bowls: he hates a beer or two! And it’s a big Meeniyan GOOD BYE to Lorraine Eddie, who has now gone to live at the Grange in Leongatha, and another to Marlene Hanks, who has moved into her lovely new Leongatha home.

MERCURIO’S MENU COMES TO MEENIYAN.

Paul Mercurio and his team have been staying at the Meeniyan Motel during the first week in December, They have been filming in South Gippsland. This is the second time they have stayed at the motel in the last 15 months. They enjoy the relaxed friendly atmosphere at the motel and hotel. They are doing a special feature on Andy’s Pizza shop, but have also filmed Meeniyan Motel, Meeniyan Hotel, Moo’s at Meeniyan and a few other things around town so please keep and eye out for Meeniyan on Mercurio’s Menu in the coming month’s.

VENUS BAY ‘HAIL & RIDE’ TRIAL BUS SERVICE

Venus Bay Bus Timetable, Map & Fares Sept09
South Gippsland Transport Connections is excited to announce that Public Transport is now available between Venus Bay, Tarwin Lower, Koonwarra & Leongatha.

This new service was developed after extensive consultations with residents and visitors from the Venus Bay area. A petition requesting a transport service to connect Venus Bay with larger towns and their service facilities was received by the South Gippsland Shire Council in December 2007. This was followed by strong representation from the Venus Bay community at several Public Transport Forums conducted by the South Gippsland Transport Connections Project in May 2008. The South Gippsland Transport Connections Advisory Committee identified Venus Bay as ‘transport disadvantaged’ and advocated for a Venus Bay Public Bus Service to be considered a major priority of the South Gippsland Transport Connections Project.
Transport Connections is funded by the Victorian Government. The program is a cross government initiative to help communities work together to improve local transport.
Surveys were sent to 1400 rate payers from the Venus Bay area to obtain community feedback about the viability of a public bus service for Venus Bay. The results of the surveys indicated that a public bus service would be well patronised by both permanent residents and visitors. Links with V/Line services, Yarram to Melbourne and Wonthaggi to Latrobe Valley, was considered to be one of the most important factors. Opportunities to access services such as supermarkets, medical facilities, banks, library, cinema, social and recreational facilities were requested. The distances from the Venus Bay shops and between the Estates were also taken into account.
It is important to remember that this is a Trial Service. This service will run for one year and then be evaluated. The community will be asked for their ideas of the success of the bus service and the Department of Transport will use this feedback to help determine the viability of ongoing public transport services in the Venus Bay area.

The Venus Bay ‘Hail & Ride’ Trial Bus Service commenced on Monday 28th September, 2009.
The bus will run twice a day on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays. The route starts at Leongatha, after the V/Line coach arrives, and travels to Venus Bay through Koonwarra and Tarwin Lower. Once at Venus Bay, the service becomes ‘Hail & Ride’ around the street route shown on the map. The bus then returns to Leongatha, stopping again at Tarwin Lower and Koonwarra in time to connect with V/Line coaches travelling to Melbourne.

The Venus Bay ‘Hail & Ride’ Trial Bus Service is a Public Transport Service operated by Dyson’s, Phone 56 622891.

Residents and visitors to Venus Bay, Tarwin Lower and Koonwarra will now be able to travel to Leongatha on a Monday and have three and a half hours for shopping, medical appointments, watch a movie at the cinema, visit the library or to catch up with friends and family. The Venus Bay trial bus service connects with V/Line services to and from Melbourne, allowing visitors to travel to Venus Bay on Friday night and return to Melbourne on Sunday afternoon. Permanent residents can escape to Melbourne or beyond for the weekend on Friday morning and return to Venus Bay Sunday afternoon or evening.

‘Hail & Ride’ allows you to catch the bus from anywhere shown on the bus route map of Venus Bay. People who want to catch the bus, just need to stand on the side of the road, along the route shown on the map, at the times listed on the timetable. The easiest way to ‘Hail’ the bus driver is to raise one arm and wave to the driver as the bus approaches. The bus driver will stop the bus at a safe location nearest to where you are standing. It is a good idea to make sure that you choose to stand in a safe and highly visible space on the bus route. You might be able to see some other people who are also waiting to catch the bus. If they are not too far away, you could walk and join them, so that the bus driver can pick you all up with just one stop. This will help to make the bus run more efficiently and keep to the times on the timetable. The great advantage of a ‘Hail & Service’ is that the longest distance people will have to travel to catch the Venus Bay bus, will be to the end of their own street. This is much easier for most people than having to go to one main stop in the township.
Residents and visitors to Venus Bay are to be encouraged to consider where they park their cars and boats, especially over the summer months, to allow enough space for the bus to travel around the streets.

The Venus Bay ‘Hail & Ride’ bus service can also be used for inter-town travel. For example you could travel to Koonwarra on a Sunday afternoon or perhaps walk one way on the Rail Trail and catch the bus home. Maybe you would prefer to enjoy a day of fishing at Tarwin?

The Venus Bay ‘Hail & Ride’ Trial Bus Service will replace the South Gippsland Shire Council (SGSC) Community Bus.
The Community Bus made its final trip to Venus Bay on Thursday 1st October, 2009. Regular travellers on the community bus have individually been contacted and informed of these changes.
A SGSC volunteer will be travelling on the bus for a period of time to assist passengers who may be unfamiliar with catching public transport.
Community Transport users that require transport assistance to attend medical appointments and have no other alternative transport options will be eligible for transport assistance with the SGSC Community Car.  Bookings for this support can be made by contacting the ‘Community Programs Team Leader’ on Ph: 5662 9359.
If you require assistance to read the timetable or if you have accessibility issues with this service please contact SGSC with individual concerns so that alternative options can be explored Ph: 5662 9370.

Council is currently considering options for eligible HACC clients to access medical appointments or other essential services within town.
The Off Peak Fares make the trips very affordable. Leongatha to Venus Bay is just $3.60 ($1.80 Concession), Koonwarra to Leongatha $2.00 ($1.00 Concession) which is cheaper than running a car!
